WHEN AND WHERE IS THE SERVICE?

Incarnation’s Maryland service will meet on the 4th Sunday of each month at 5pm at Hyattsville Mennonite Church, 4217 East-West Hwy, Hyattsville, MD 20782.

WHAT ABOUT PARKING, BUS, AND METRO?

There is a small parking lot onsite at Hyattsville Mennonite. The church is also on multiple bus routes and near several Metro and MARC stations.

WHY IS THE SERVICE ONLY MONTHLY (NOT WEEKLY)?

This service is a new project of Incarnation, a church based in Virginia. We are beginning with a monthly frequency for several reasons. First, because the Incarnation members in Maryland are already an integral part of our Virginia church community. We’ve made baptismal promises to their kids, welcomed them as members, prayed for their confirmations, and been blessed by their service and participation each week. We want to keep worshiping together most of the time!

Second, because this service is simply our next step of discernment. In other words, it’s an experiment! We believe a monthly rhythm will offer enough frequency to try something new and see what develops, without spreading ourselves too thin.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE SERVICE?

The service will last about an hour and 15 minutes, and will follow an Anglican liturgy that includes prayer, song, scripture, a short sermon, and communion. "Liturgy" simply means "the work of the people," and it really is — many hands and voices work together each week in our worship. During most of the year, we follow the Renewed Ancient liturgy that begins on page 123 in the 2019 Book of Common Prayer. From Easter until the fall, we follow a liturgy from the Kenyan church. The words of the liturgy and song lyrics are provided on a printed bulletin, with space to color or doodle. You can view our services on YouTube to get a feel for our worship.

WHAT ABOUT KIDS?

We value the inclusion and participation of children (this letter from Amy explains why). Children will worship in the service with their parents. There is a small nook in the sanctuary for young children and worship bags provided for older children to use in the pews. Parents may use the nursery use on a self-serve basis. Over time, if we grow in number or frequency, we may be able to offer more children’s programs.

IS THE SERVICE ACCESSIBLE?

Yes! The church is fully accessible. We also provide sensory items (pocket crosses, play dough, noise-canceling headphones) in a basket on the welcome table to facilitate worship for those with sensory needs or who simply desire a more embodied worship. Incarnation has several members with disabilities and we try to facilitate the fullest inclusion possible; please contact us to discuss further.

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC?
We value participation over performance in our musical worship. We sing a mix of traditional hymns and chants, contemporary praise songs, and songs from other languages and cultures. Not everyone will know every language or every song, and that's perfectly alright. Those occasional unfamiliar languages, rhythms, or choruses remind us that we are part of a multi-lingual, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural community of worshipers around the world.
WHAT DO PEOPLE WEAR?
People tend to dress casually, but all styles are welcome.

The pastors dress in garments called vestments: a simple white robe called a cassock-alb, a rope at the waist called a cincture, and a scarf in the colors of the church year called a stole. Vestments do not confer any sort of elite spiritual status for those who wear them. Quite the opposite, in fact. They help erase the class and style markers of the priests' clothing, marking clergy as servants. And they are a visual signal that when we come to church, we are entering a different kind of community, a different kind of culture, a wholly new reality that we share through our baptism, which the white robes are meant to evoke. If you're curious to learn more, just ask.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE SERVICE?
We hold a potluck after the service; please plan to stay and bring something to share!
IS THERE AN OFFERING?
Each week, we prepare to bring ourselves as an offering to God, just as we are, through an offertory song and prayers just before communion. This service will not collect a physical offering. However, those who wish to give financially may do so online or by text: read more.
IS THERE AN ONLINE OPTION?

This service is not live-streamed. However, you may watch the 10am Virginia service on YouTube each week using the link on the Online Worship page.
