I Timothy 2:1-2 - I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
There is so much to pray for today as we consider our city/metro-DC, and more locally our zipcode(s) as the shutdown continues.
A few suggestions as you pray:
Pray often. Pray daily. Pray earnestly. Our prayer does make a difference. God wants to hear our concerns and to know that we are engaging. He loves to respond to our prayers and petitions, and, in addition, the Holy Spirit works deeply in our hearts and lives when we open ourselves up, interceding and asking for guidance. We are changed by our prayers as well as the things we pray about. Pray with grace, and yet decisive clarity.
Pray for a resolution that will allow the shutdown to end well. Pray for justice, and for workers to be paid for their work promptly. Pray for good decisions to be made by government. Let us know how you are praying so we can agree with you as well...
Pray for your neighbors. I have been amazed that so many people in our small Incarnation community are affected. Some directly, some furloughed, some working without pay, some on contracts which will expire in the next days, weeks or (for one or two) months. Some unexpected people, connected in unexpected ways. How are your neighbors doing?
Things we can do:
Incarnation has set aside a reserve of money, mostly given by a generous donor, which we will happily use to support any individuals or households in our community who are struggling at this time. Please, if you are affected, and need some help to get through this period - let me know.
Look out for your neighbors who are affected too. Do they need a meal? Help with critical bills? Can you help them? Meeting practical needs is core to our gospel message. Let them know we are praying for the situation. Let us know if we can help.
AND remind your friends and colleagues they can get a free meal any Weds night at Alpha for the next 7 weeks :-).
Please let us know if you have ideas as to how we can help as you reach out to those around you.
I am so grateful for you all - thank you for being faithful partners in the gospel.
